About 20 years ago, I was doing a Halloween benefit at
the Aladdin. We were doing the Crematorium and
my two assistants rolled it out and unbeknownst to me, they rolled it
over a microphone cord. Well,
the wheels and legs were slightly bent. So, I put the girl in and cremated
her and when the thing
fell apart to show the skeleton, it fell over and she fell out of the
trap door in front of everybody.

I was driving
to Mesquite and the car overheated within 30 miles, so I filled the radiator
with
water and took off. 30 miles later it overheated again. We filled it up
with more water (I was ready
for anything). This time when it overheated it wouldn't kick over. The
show was in an hour and I
had to get there, so I decided to hitch hike. No one wanted to pick me
up (who would want to pick
up a grumpy old man?) so I got my assistant out of the car and had her
flag someone down - that
worked, of course. We made it to the show 10 minutes before show time
and after the show was over,
we had to have my car towed so that we could get home. I showed the guy
a few simple sponge ball
routines and he was so impressed that there was no charge.

I was doing
an anchor escape. I was rehearsing. I had them chain me up and throw me
in the pool. And
I had a buddy there keeping an eye one me so that in case something went
wrong, he could pull me out.
I had rehearsed a half a dozen times, but this time, sure enough, I forgot
the gimmick! So I was
down in the bottom of a 12 foot pool, and I said, OK, come on and get
me! But my buddy was talking
with a few girls - he could care less about me! So, I flipped over with
my fingertips and toes and
decided I would try to make it to the shallow part. I almost made it and
then he did discover me. I
almost got killed that day!

The lie was #2 the tow truck story. The story is true that Gary had to
hitchhike once to do a show
but no tow truck driver would wave his fee for a sponge ball trick!
