2 Truths & a Lie
Teachers

We demo some of the puzzles, brain teasers, and tricks that are found at TeachByMagic.com at teacher conferences
to capture their attention. The most popular trick that we demo (and teach) them there at our booth is what we
call, The Amazing Magnetic Hand. It’s just the trick where it looks like you’re making a pencil or bookmark
or spoon float, but you’re really just holding it with your finger (for video, visit TeachByMagic.com and search
for "The Magnetized Hand"). We present it to them the way that they would present it to their class, so in
this instance, we use it as a lesson on magnetism. We tell them that we’re going to combine the positive
element of a pencil with the negative element of squeezing our wrist and that will create a temporary
magnetic field which will allow the pencil to stick to our hand. Then, of course, we teach them what’s
actually happening. We have had some funny responses to this trick; enjoy and good luck!!

1) After demonstrating the trick, one of the teachers
in our audience turned to her friend and asked, “Did
the magnetism automatically open up your hand for you,
or did you have to open your hand yourself?”

2) After demonstrating and TEACHING one teacher the
trick, she said, “But you don’t have to use your finger
to hold it if you don’t want to; you can just squeeze
your wrist, right?”

3) After demonstrating the trick, one teacher’s pencil
was not “sticking” to his hand, so he proceeded to
squeeze his wrist even harder as he waved his hand over
the pencil, waiting for the pencil to fly up to his hand because of the magnetism he was creating.

The lie is number 3 - we had a teacher ask if that would work but
he did not give it a try.
